I went retro this Christmas. Like 2,000 year retro!
It was a dark, bleak Christmas this year. And as I carefully assessed my feelings, I realized that this holiday season was eerily aligned with the first ever Christmas. I’ve never felt so isolated and alone as I have felt this holiday. It just seems so bleak and dark. And, the future seems more uncertain than ever. But, it was dark 2,000 years ago too.
It had to have been incredibly bleak and dark for Mary and Joseph. They were austrocized from society. They didn’t conform to the social expectations of the time. After all, it was unthinkable that they would stay together given Mary was pregnant out of wedlock. They experienced discrimination when they were looking for a place to stay.
There was room at the local hotels for everyone that confirmed to the social pressures of their day, but just not them. They were outcasts. Mary, Joseph and and their tiny newborn were isolated.
They had major political issues then too.
But what happened in that bleak time, changed history and it changed me. So, I went retro this Christmas and honored the original Christmas Day.
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” (Isaiah 9:2)
